Composer’s Note
During my time at the University of New Hampshire working towards my Master’s in Music my thesis focused on the comparison of William Schuman’s Symphony No. 3, Roy Harris’s Symphony No. 3 in One Movement, and Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3 and how these three works are the foundation of the American Symphony genre. At the same time, I was struggling with inspiration after completing a commission for the Pittsfield (MA) High School Band. I was challenged by my then composition professor Dr. Michael Annicchiarico to write a non-programmatic work as an exercise to try to spark something.
While sketching I inadvertently wrote a melody that had a similar voice to the opening of Copland’s Mvt. I of his Third Symphony. I decided to run with with it and create a modern-day Chorale and Dance that respectfully pays homage to Aaron Copland’s voice while intertwining my own voice throughout the work. I view this work as a turning point in my compositional voice as I honor one of my influences.
